Nurturing Your Own Energy: Gentle Wisdom for Helpers & Caregivers

If you’re someone who naturally gives, supports, and helps others, you probably know how easy it is to forget about yourself in the process. Saying “yes” to others often feels automatic—until there’s very little left for the person in the mirror.
The Helper’s Journey
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a helper. I even confirmed this with my mom recently—she reminded me how, as a little kid, my sister and I would trail behind her, eager to lend a hand. I can still picture the tiny apron I wore while helping her or my grandmother in the kitchen.
Helping is a beautiful quality… until it’s not.
When “Yes” Becomes Too Much
As helpers, we’re quick to say yes to everyone else. But saying yes to ourselves? That can feel selfish, or even impossible. We give our time, our energy, and our attention so freely—sometimes leaving none for our own needs.
I’ve had to learn (and relearn, many times) that the most loving choice isn’t always another “yes.” Even if it’s something I enjoy, my body, mind, and spirit sometimes need rest. My calendar sometimes needs space.
The Power of Rest & Space
Rest and self-care aren’t indulgences—they’re part of nurturing your own energy in a sustainable way. They’re what make it possible to live with balance and presence. And balance isn’t about holding perfectly still—it ebbs and flows, just like the seasons. But it can be sustainable if we tend to ourselves with the same care we give to others.
Remembering You Deserve Care, Too
So, to my fellow helpers (which I have a feeling is many of you):
What if you offered yourself the same tenderness you give everyone else? What might shift?
This week, I invite you to pause and notice one small way you could say yes to yourself. Give yourself time, give yourself space, give yourself kindness. You’re still a helper—you’re simply remembering that you are someone worth helping, too.
✨ If your inner helper could use some tending, you might love my upcoming Reiki I & II training. It’s a beautiful way to nurture yourself, deepen your connection to your own energy, and refill your cup—so you can keep showing up in ways that feel good.
