From Burnout to Beginning Again: My First Step Toward Healing

We all have moments that quietly shift the course of our lives. For me, one of those moments came in the form of a Reiki training I hadn’t planned on taking—but deeply needed. This is the story of how I began again, from burnout to reconnection, and how Reiki became the doorway back to myself.
Let me tell you about the weekend that changed everything.
It was the fall of 2015. I had left the corporate world behind almost a year earlier and returned to New York, hoping that a change of scenery would help me finally exhale. But the truth was—I was still carrying the weight of everything I thought I’d left behind.
I was burnt out.
I was searching—for peace, for purpose, for myself.
At the time, I didn’t have the language to describe what was happening in my body. Now I know: my nervous system was deeply disregulated, and I was completely disconnected from it. What I did know was that something needed to shift. I didn’t know what that would look like—but I was willing to follow any thread that felt true.
So I started small.
I attended group meditations.
I followed the whispers of curiosity.
One of those whispers led me to a psychic medium. I wasn’t expecting much beyond some interesting insight, but I’ll never forget what they told me that day:
“You’re a healer.”
If you’ve worked with me, you know I don’t usually call myself that. I believe that you—and your body—are the healer. I’m simply a guide, someone who walks beside you as you remember your way back to yourself. But still, what they said resonated. It stirred something in me.
They mentioned an upcoming Reiki I & II training they were co-teaching, and even though I barely knew what Reiki was, something clicked. A quiet inner spark. A week or two later, I registered—without knowing much of anything about what I was stepping into.
At that point, I’d only received one Reiki session in my life. Years earlier. I couldn’t have predicted what that weekend would bring. I only knew I needed to be there. That it might help me… help me.
Before the training began, we were asked to set aside some quiet time for ourselves. That invitation stayed with me long after the weekend was over.
During the training, I connected with new people—but more importantly, I began to reconnect with myself. It wasn’t dramatic. It wasn’t flashy. It was subtle. Still. Something inside me softened.
I didn’t walk away from that weekend thinking I’d one day have a healing practice or become a teacher. That part came later. What I did walk away with was a new relationship with myself. A sense of permission. Of presence. And it all started with that first yes.
I’ll share more about my Reiki journey in the months to come. But for now, I want to leave you with this:
Whether or not you’ve ever thought about learning Reiki…
Whether you’re drawn to support others, or simply want to support yourself…
Whether you’re in a season of burnout, transition, or just quietly curious…
